Relegation threatened Werder Bremen need a result when they host Wolfsburg on Sunday.
Bremen failed to build on a win over Schalke when they were thrashed at home by Eintracht Frankfurt in mid-week.
Two Stefan Ilsanker goals condemned Bremen to a 16th league defeat of the season and they are in the division’s bottom three.
Frankfurt also got the better of Wolfsburg in the league, recording a 2-1 away victory last weekend.
A late Daichi Kamada goal earned Frankfurt all three points to leave Wolfsburg just outside of the Champions League spots.
